On November 22nd Jim Hubbard – a New York City-based filmmaker and ACT UP member – will be presenting a public lecture at Concordia University in conjunction with the premiere screening of his documentary film, United in Anger: A History of ACT UP.

The documentary chronicles the trajectory of the epidemic and the work of advocacy group ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) at the time when a voice needed to be given to the epidemic.

Community organizing would become one of the most important vehicles of engaging in projects towards social change at the rise of the epidemic in the early 1980s. The documentary shares the silenced stories of individuals who fought to overcome the AIDS crisis, advocating for the proper attention that those who were affected by the disease were in serious need of.  Taking its viewers into the streets of New York City and the community-held meetings of organizations like ACT UP, the documentary includes rare archival footage of those who were directly affected by AIDS and who revolutionized the way the disease would come to be understood years after the time of its tragic emergence in world history.

Reviews of the documentary are extremely positive. This is a screening opportunity not to be missed!

The screening is free and will take place at 7 p.m. in room H-110 of the Henry F. Hall Building at Concordia

  1. Sarah

I am definitely looking forward to this screening. It is a shock to think that people once tried to get HIV positive individuals to be tattooed as warnings, ridiculous.

  2. Thanks for this great review, Caitlin! I hope we’ll be able to work with you again for our Winter semester screenings as well!
