In an industry completely dominated by men, and a society that thinks women can’t be funny, it can sometimes be difficult to succeed or gain recognition as a female comedian.
Montreal’s Eman started the Canadian Women’s Comedy Festival ‘She’s Canadian, Eh?’ to combat the idea that female comedians aren’t very funny; The Gaily was gladly at last night’s opening show at Theatre Saint Catherine where it was clear that Montreal and Canada have some very funny ladies, indeed.
Eman’s group of headliners is a real tour de force, and among them are several funny bent ladies too.
The Montreal Gazette recently reported on the influx of gay female comics in Montreal, which arguably is not at all true. Many in the industry would say that there have been lezzies in comedy as long as there have been women. But with the rising star that is DeAnne Smith, the sapphic funny girls are getting more attention, and attracting a big lezzie following.
Last night’s show featured Montreal’s leading gay lady and headliner Heidi Foss. Eman cleaverly upped the queer with comedian Peter J Radomsky opening in drag (Angela Mister Yossa). I am not sure if he will be back throughout the weekend, but it was a great addition to the show. Foss will be back headlining tonight’s 9:30 show.
She’s Canadian, Eh! will run from August 18th – August 20th, 2011 in Montreal’s “Quartier Des Spectacles” district, at the intimate Theatre Ste-Catherine, located at 264 Ste- Catherine Street East. The headliners will take the stage Friday at 7:30pm(Eman); 9:30pm(Heidi); and 11:00pm(Claire & Christina) for the Late (Dirty) Show. Then again Saturday at 7:30pm(Jen); 9:30pm(Jen); and 11:00pm(Claire & Christina) for the Late (Dirty) Show. Entrance is $20 per show.
