The Military Celebrates, Cyber-bullied Gay Teen Commits Suicide

I have to be honest. I began this Gaily Beat post as a tribute to all those in the American military that can now be who they are while fighting for the rights of others. It was a great post, but than I came across a Facebook feed telling me that another boy killed himself in the name of bullying. There was no contest, the boy won the Gaily Beat piece today.

Jamey Rodemeyer, a 14 year-old from Buffalo, New York took his own life recently after incessant bullying by his classmates. It`s hard to imagine what life must be like growing up with classmates posting on your Formspring account “JAMIE IS STUPID, GAY, FAT, ANND UGLY. HE MUST DIE!”, and “I wouldn`t care if you died. No one would. So just do it :) It would make everyone WAY more happier!”

Jamey cried for help and change long before he passed away. On September 9 his Tumblr stated “I always say how bullied I am, but no one listens. What do I have to do so people will listen to me?”

His last post on one of his Facebook was an homage and thank you to Lady Gaga. “Don’t forget me when I come crying to heaven’s door,” a lyric from her song The Queen.

According to his mother, Jamey had been questioning his sexuality for the last year. When he reached out to classmates he was made fun of and bullied. In fact he was bullied for most of his life.

He was seeing a social worker and a therapist at the time of his suicide, however his lack of social support was, especially at the age of 14, most likely a major influence in his death.

It can’t be said enough. This needs to stop. I thought school was difficult in the eighties when I was Jamey’s age. Thank Bejeezus we didn’t have Facebook. The online community is so important to us, and even more important to the youth of today-especially those that are like Jamey.

Just think about it. A 14 year-old killed himself because he was made fun of. I can’t even think of it for long because it overwhelms me. It’s wrong. So wrong.

  1. It’s pretty freaking awful, it’s all the more heartbreaking that this kid, even when he was suffering with the bullying, somehow managed to make his own ‘it get’s better’ video.

  2. Kelley

I can’t get over how tragic this is. How can bullies think that this is okay? This should not be happening.
